Dutch designer Bas van Beek is only 34 but has already shaken up the design landscape with his critical statements and unusual design. He has bucket loads of criticism on colleagues who take themselves too seriously, and their designs not serious enough. The fact that the designer and the head of the designLAB at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam graduated with casts of his own excrements ensured that people presumed the worst.‘ It was my way of examining how you can generate new shapes, unconnected to the designer’s ego.’ Bas evolved from research to ‘making things’ – which he also does in an unpredictable manner. At DECOoh! you can discover, among others, his glass collection, created by a master glass blower whom Bas asked to make mistakes on purpose, such as opening the mould too early.
